It\'s SUNet ID!!!

Deep Thoughts by Mark - It's SUNet ID, darn i!!! Deep Thoughts - It's SUNet ID!!! by Mark Wang

Well, this is sort of random, but I recently heard one of my sisters mention (in front of a very big group) that "my email address is 'foo'". This is what, the millionth time? Arrrrgh. I felt a need to set things straight.

  • My email address is mwang@leland.stanford.edu. People use this to send email. Email address != username. If you log into a cardinal, epic, elaine, adelbert, tree, raptor, amy, firebird, voyager, apollo or whatever, you don't type in the whole "mwang@leland.stanford.edu" Likewise, for someone that's not on the Leland system, typing in just "mwang" when they're sending email most likely won't work.
  • My leland username is mwang. I type this in when I log into a Leland machine, or any other machine that uses that password system.

But mwang and the password that's associated with it, it's so much more than that. It lets you dial in, use those Tresidder/Meyer computers, vote, and so much more. Not to mention that there are other machines, like Rescomp, where I use that same password. So the word is SUNet ID.

Indeed, I implore you (as Henry would say), to get the term straight. If you're really bored (Like I am, since I'm writing this of course...) you can check out the real page, which reveals what this mysterious term really stands for. Calling it a "Leland username" is like calling Christianity a religion. It's nowhere near the whole picture.

Anyways, I hope this explaination isn't too hard to follow.

It's

Have a nice day... =)

Idiot recruiters

I've got nothing against recruiters in general. Being in need of a job myself, I generally appreciate the ones who will go out of their way to find interesting and relevant job opportunities for candidates like me. However, those who resort to questionable tactics (eg, spamming your resume to companies without your permission), or are just plain ignorant will earn my utmost disdain.

As an instance of the latter: just because I used to work at E.piphany does not mean that:

  • I am still interested in working with E.piphany software as an implementer, especially when my resume objective clearly states that I am seeking something completely different
  • I am qualified to do so -- E.piphany is a diverse company with a diverse line of products; if you worked at Microsoft on the Xbox, does that automatically make you qualified to set up and administer a MS SQL Server?
If I get another email about an "E.piphany position", I'm seriously thinking about making a new section for lame emails I receive, and posting it. =P

The never-ending de-evolution of idiots

From this page of mine:

(BTW, apparently as a result of Google searches for Steve Saint, I get a lot of hits on this page, and a lot of random emails asking for him. While funny to read for me, in the interest of steering people away from this wrong track, please note that I am not Steve Saint, nor connected with him in any way other than as a brother in Christ. ;))

Lo and behold, what do I get in my email but this message:

Dear Mark,
I'm a documentary filmmaker working for National Geographic. I'm trying to get in touch with Steven Saint. I visited the Auca about twenty years ago and actually met his mother; and have been asked about developing a film in that area. I'd very much like to speak to him. Do you have any contact information? With kind regards
Idiot

From National Geographic, no less. I could tell she got my email from that page by checking server logs. There's an old adage in the tech support world, never underestimate the idiots out there. True that.

Update: Upon further thought, I realized that I might have been a bit harsh. I was in a crummy mood when I wrote this, and felt the need to vent somehow. Still, I wish people would please carefully read what's written somewhere before taking action.

Something that pissed me off

Picture019_27Mar04.jpg

(The car depicted is a Lexus SUV.)

To me, this picture captures nicely some reasons why those in other lands often think negatively about Americans:

1. Rampant and conspicuous consumerism.
2. An inability to respect rules and boundaries set (even by themselves).
3. An inability to correct their own mistakes.

Anger.
