The Canon office in Shanghai finally got back to me about my 10D.
Turns out there was more damage than suspected. =P Repair cost will be about 20% of the cost of a new 20D here. Should I do it?
Or should I wait and get a 30D (widely rumored to be announced at this year's PMA show in Orlando, in a few weeks)? Or get a 20D once the inevitable price drops occur?
It's been too long, that's for sure...

i'd wait for the PMA announcement if you don't have anything important to take in the next few weeks. (memories are priceless... get the 20d now if there's something you really want to take.) hard to compare the 20d to a product that hasn't been announced yet, but i'll say that i feel the 20d is a much more mature camera than the 10d. the AF is somewhat faster, and noise levels are still good at 800 and acceptable at 1600 (given the circumstances).

I'm still making do with my good old (20+ year old) Cannon A-1, perhaps the first SLR with a built-in digital light meter; unlike some cameras today, it has actually increased in value over time. I often think a digital camera would be nice, but the little ones don't have as good a picture quality as the camera I already have. Thank goodness for photo CDs when I develop my film. Ok, I know what I just wrote isn't really that related to your "dilemma."
