Deep Thoughts by Mark - It's SUNet ID, darn i!!! Deep Thoughts - It's SUNet ID!!! by Mark Wang
Well, this is sort of random, but I recently heard one of my sisters mention (in front of a very big group) that "my email address is 'foo'". This is what, the millionth time? Arrrrgh. I felt a need to set things straight.
- My email address is mwang@leland.stanford.edu. People use this to send email. Email address != username. If you log into a cardinal, epic, elaine, adelbert, tree, raptor, amy, firebird, voyager, apollo or whatever, you don't type in the whole "mwang@leland.stanford.edu" Likewise, for someone that's not on the Leland system, typing in just "mwang" when they're sending email most likely won't work.
- My leland username is mwang. I type this in when I log into a Leland machine, or any other machine that uses that password system.
But mwang and the password that's associated with it, it's so much more than that. It lets you dial in, use those Tresidder/Meyer computers, vote, and so much more. Not to mention that there are other machines, like Rescomp, where I use that same password. So the word is SUNet ID.
Indeed, I implore you (as Henry would say), to get the term straight. If you're really bored (Like I am, since I'm writing this of course...) you can check out the real page, which reveals what this mysterious term really stands for. Calling it a "Leland username" is like calling Christianity a religion. It's nowhere near the whole picture.
Anyways, I hope this explaination isn't too hard to follow.
It's
Have a nice day... =)
