Singapore Singapore was the site of the first Marketplace Strategic Alliance held October 5-7 at the Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre. The conference also held the first Christian Resource Exhibition in conjunction with the business conference in which exhibitors displayed the latest in Christian products from Christian music to the latest technology for churches and ministry. Wilson Cheah, president of the Singapore Chapter of the International Christian Chamber of Commerce and organizer of the event, called the event "just the beginning of something God is doing in Singapore and the Asian region." Representatives were present from Jamaica, USA, Malaysia, Australia, Taiwan, and Nigeria. The 300-400 attendees were challenged to see their work as their ministry. A special emphasis of the conference was given to the "Joseph Calling" which speaks directly to the significant role Singapore business leaders are called to enter into. Many of the speakers acknowledged that God wants to use the Singapore Christian businessperson for God s purposes in these days. The leaders believe this event is just the beginning of something God wants to accomplish in their region of the world. Singapore has long been viewed as the entry point to the Asian region and now has a spiritual role to play in this. Singapore has seen significant progress in unifying church leaders for the purposes of the gospel. The three-day conference had speakers from many different nations including Reverend Peter Tsukahira, an Asian American who is an Israeli citizen. Mr. Tsukahira conducted two sessions focused on the marketplace calling of men and women and the "Joseph Calling." Lawrence Khong, Senior Pastor of Faith Community Baptist Church spoke at an evening service and challenged the delegates to impact their culture through the media. Pastor Khong has been the leader of Love Singapore, a major initiative designed to unify the pastors and churches in the region. Os Hillman, president of Marketplace Leaders from the USA led two sessions on the topic of Restoring the Marketplace to God s Economy and a morning workshop session entitled, How To Live for a Cause Greater than Yourself. Hillman challenged the delegates to live a crucified life and to examine their lives in light of God s economy. Ntiense Ubon-Israel from Nigeria spoke to the delegates on the subject of Understanding and Winning the Battle in the Marketplace. Ntiense Ubon-Israel has had special training in the area of intercessory prayer in the marketplace. He challenged the delegates to greater awareness of the spiritual warfare that lies behind many activities in the marketplace. Jackie Yockey, COO of High Adventure Ministries from the USA, challenged the delegates to overcome the obstacles of their marketplace calling by calling upon the resources God has gifted every individual with. Ms. Yockey provided testimony to the way God has directed her in your own calling in the marketplace arena as former executive with the Christian Broadcasting Network. Eric Thurman, Executive Director of HOPE International, provided a challenge to the delegates to consider the needs of the poor in their marketplace calling. Thurman provided insights into the current condition of the poor around the world and some of the strategies necessary to impact their condition. Thurman provided case studies in which micro-enterprise was used to positively affect the poor. Special sessions were conducted on the needs of women in the workplace with women speakers giving testimony to God s work in their marketplace calling. A particular moving time took place when the conference leadership acknowledged a need to repent of the inequities that have often existed between men and women in the marketplace. Special Panel discussions were conducted on various marketplace topics to allow delegates to take practical ideas back to their work life. Overall, the conference was deemed a very successful event, which came together in a matter of only a few months. Leaders acknowledged this was the start of something significant for the marketplace Christians in the Singapore and neighboring region. Singapore and Malaysia Personal Diary Reports from Os Hillman Following are some of the highlights from our trip to Singapore and Malaysia October 3-12 One of the great blessings of this trip is to meet many TGIF marketplace meditations subscribers personally from this part of the world. There have been many who come up to me and say they have subscribed for some time and greet me warmly. The letter below is one such example. The workshop that is planned for this Saturday is expected to have more than 200 business people in attendance due to an article that appeared in the local newspaper about the workshop. Dear Os, I am thrilled that after having read so many of your articles, I am finally able to meet you face to face in Kota kinabalu. I am signing up for the Called to the Workplace - Esau to Joseph seminar on Saturday. I am not be able to meet you through the weekdays as I am traveling. I have read your touching testimony, which represent many of us. You also represent many of our quests of wanting to know what God is doing in our lives and what is his calling in a decadent world we live in. I am much encouraged by your many insightful writing, which I subscribed through God Is First Today. Thanks and we pray that the lord will anoint your lips and your mind as His vessel and oracles as you teach and preach in Sabah. God bless you with His peace and joy in serving Him. Regards, Steven Loh. Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. October 5 - 7 Greetings from Singapore and Malaysia. The Singapore conference concluded on Saturday and this is the first time I have had a chance to send a note. This has been a great experience for us. The Lord moved greatly among us. We had about 300 -400 in attendance and the people received my message very enthusiastically. I spoke one time for 2 hours and another time for an hour and fifteen minutes. I also led a group discussion. To our surprise, the two large boxes of books we brought with were almost all sold out. We have only a few books for Malaysia and Taipei. Saturday night was a final banquet that brought conclusion to the event. Angie and I have been learning to adjust to the many different kinds of food here and have often had to guess what we were eating at times. Our Singapore friends have been very helpful to educate us. Sunday after church we were treated to a Tex-Mex restaurant -- -- the owner was one of the conference attendees. Chinese food is the most common food and it is very different from American Chinese food. One thing that was neat that happened yesterday was I had felt led the night before I was to speak to include a passage in my power point presentation from Matthew regarding Jesus riding into town on a donkey and that donkeys represented commerce in the bible and God wanted to have use of the conference attendee s "donkeys." The next morning at breakfast I sat with one of the intercessors of the conference who began to tell me the Lord had spoken to her about the need for the Singapore business people to give their "donkeys" to the Lord. She wrote out the word of prophecy and gave it to me. This was the first conference of this type in Singapore that sought to bring other marketplace ministries together and church leaders together. Singapore is a beautiful city and has more shopping malls in one place than anywhere I have ever been. They have a very upscale, progressive city and it is a very clean city. English is spoken by most everyone. Sunday, October 8 Angie and I attended local church services with Wilson Cheah, president of ICCC Singapore. That night I spoke to a local chapter of CBMC in Singapore. They had a dinner for about 25 of their members and I was asked to come share briefly with their chapter. A local businessman was our host and brought us to one of the tallest buildings in Singapore that was 63 stories tall. We were able to see the entire island, which is only 14 miles by 22 miles. Tuesday, October 10, 2000 I took Angie to the airport to return to the states. I flew to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to begin five days of meetings in churches and among business groups. The first night was held in the home church of Stanley Kee, my host in Malaysia. The meeting was held in the community of Subang, Jaya. I spoke to about 110 business people and local members on the topic, The Great Weapon Satan Uses to Keep Marketplace Christians from Achieving their Destiny. Stanley said it was one of the largest turnouts he has had for a weekday meeting and God seemed to really minister to the people regarding the role of adversity and spiritual strongholds in the life of the believer. I spoke for about 2 hours using my powerpoint presentations. A time of prayer and commitment was given at the end of the time to release the people from generational strongholds. Wednesday, October 11 Our meeting was held in a small church in Kajang, Kajang Assembly of God. I shared on the topic of Attributes of the Kingdom Business Today. The people received me warmly and several came up after to talk about how they related to the message. During the day I was taken around town and went to visit the world s tallest building, the K & L Building, known as the twin towers it has 83 floors. A movie, Entrapment, with Sean Connery was made recently in which he was on the bridge between the two towers. Thursday, October 12 We travel by plane for about 3 hours to the eastern part of Malaysia, Kota Kninabalu that is separated by water. I will be speaking in a large church as a forerunner for our workshop to be held on Saturday. We have been told to expect 150 200 for that workshop and that some government leaders will attend. Cultural Observations Meetings don t begin before 8:30 pm due to the need to allow time for travel from home and for the people to eat dinner. We usually at after the meetings and rarely got home before midnight. Gas is more than $4 a gallon in Singapore. Most people live in government high-rise apartment buildings that they own as apts, but more like condos. A VW bug will cost you about $80,000. Cars are very expensive here. A local businessman who gave me a tour of the island took me to his home that was a duplex that would sell for $3 million in Singapore. One US dollar is 1.70 Singapore dollars. One US dollar is 3.8 Malaysia Ringit.(their dollar). More shopping malls are here than anywhere I have ever seen. All are very upscale and attractive. Most food is Chinese and they eat lots of fish, duck, and other types of food uncommon to us in America. They don t eat many sweets. Chinese tea is very common at their meals. Much of the food they eat is either raw or boiled. ============================================================ Click here to visit Marketplace Leaders News Subscription: http://MarketplaceLeaderNews.injesus.com/
